Chapel of Disease – Echoes of Light Album Review

Chapel of Disease have once again defied expectations and pushed the boundaries of metal with their latest release, Echoes of Light. The band’s evolution from their traditional death metal roots to a more experimental and multi-genre sound has been a topic of much discussion in the metal community, and this album only solidifies their reputation as one of the most adventurous and unpredictable bands in the scene.

From the opening track, “Echoes of Light,” it is clear that Chapel of Disease are not content to stay within the confines of any one genre. The riff that kicks off the album sounds like a hybrid of Supertramp and Kvelertak, setting the tone for an album that is as diverse as it is engaging. Tracks like “Gold/Dust” and “Shallow Nights” showcase the band’s ability to seamlessly blend elements of classic metal with more modern influences like Tribulation and Alcest. The result is a sound that is both familiar and completely new, keeping listeners on their toes throughout the entire album.

When Chapel of Disease do decide to delve back into their metal roots, as seen in tracks like “Selenophile,” they do so with a ferocity and intensity that is unmatched. The aggressive growls of frontman Laurent Teubl add a layer of depth and power to these tracks, while the addition of synths and clean guitar parts elevate the music to new heights. The production on the album, handled masterfully by Teubl and Michael Zech, adds a sharpness and clarity to the sound that was lacking in their previous release.

While some may find the clean vocal performances on Echoes of Light to be a bit questionable, overall the album is a strong testament to Chapel of Disease’s ability to innovate and experiment within the metal genre. Longtime fans of the band may be challenged by the new direction, but for those willing to embrace the band’s evolution, there is much to appreciate and enjoy on this record.

In conclusion, Chapel of Disease have once again proven themselves to be a band that is unafraid to take risks and explore new territory. Echoes of Light is a bold and ambitious album that showcases the band’s growth and maturity, while still retaining the raw energy and passion that has always been a hallmark of their music. Whether you are a longtime fan or a newcomer to their sound, this album is definitely worth a listen.
